I wish more moms knew that when they are overstimulated and sensitive to noise, they may be nutrient deficient. I wish more moms knew that "mom rage" is really nutrient deficiencies and low progesterone. I wish more moms knew that the more they nourish their body, balance their blood sugar and prioritize nervous system balance, the less they will yell, the less they will feel overstimulate. I wish more moms knew that being overstimulated is so COMMON that it SEEMS NORMAL.... but it's not. (View Tweet)
You need zinc for FSH to rise thus promoting ovulation. When you ovulate, you produce progesterone (your calming hormone). This isn't to suggest every woman supplement zinc, but to consider eating quality sourced meat. Women don't eat enough meat, which balances their blood sugar and is a BUILDING BLOCK to producing enough stomach acid which is NEEDED for nutrient absorption. Zinc is crucial for blood sugar regulation, helps with menstrual cramps, improves acne, and so much more. There is no one nutrient depletion that exists in isolation though.... supplementing with an isolated nutrient can sometimes be warranted but can create other imbalances. (View Tweet)
The best sources of zinc are oysters, red meat, eggs, poultry. Seeds, nuts, some vegetables also have zinc but the most bioavailable sources of zinc are from meats. (View Tweet)
Magnesium is the next critical nutrient that is often deficient in moms. This amazing mineral is responsible for over 300 actions in the body. It is your calming mineral. It has been shown to alleviate PMS and menstrual cramps (because it relaxes smooth muscle). As well, it is wonderful for those with headaches and anxiety. Magnesium is crucial for estrogen metabolism. Magnesium is critical for Phase 2 detoxification in the liver, absolutely important for the body to eliminate excess estrogen. Magnesium increases DHEA and serotonin levels. If more moms knew about magnesium, it would change a generation of women. (View Tweet)
Vitamin B6 is critical for the liver to metabolize and breakdown estrogen. It also helps to increase your progesterone production because you need B6 to produce the corpus luteum which then produces progesterone. B6 is also needed for tryptophan to be metabolized into serotonin, which is needed for melatonin (hello SLEEP). You also need B6 for GABA. So so so many are low in GABA (your calming neurotransmitter). B6 is also critical for balancing blood sugar and is needed by the body to reduce histamine. Yeast (which is often an issue for women, especially after birth control) stimulates more histamine production. When you have too much estrogen (often the case) you release more histamine... this combined with chronic gut dysbiosis/infections, creates menstrual headaches, nasal congestion, and ANXIETY. This doesn't necessarily mean to go grab a B6 supplement because typically if one B vitamin is low, others are low too. But one might consider a good B complex. (View Tweet)
Vitamin C is so needed by the adrenals. Moms are often stressed and sleeping very little. This uses up your Vitamin C. This is also why when you're super stressed you often get sick. Support those adrenals with Vitamin C, sodium, and potassium. If you support your adrenals, you can balance cortisol levels which will also balance blood sugar. Blood sugar balance is absolutely crucial for sustained energy as well as more even mood, less irritability, and hormone balance. Vitamin E is another vitamin that women are often depleted in. It decreases inflammation, helps with stress tolerance, and can act like progesterone in the body. Again, progesterone being low in relationship with a high estrogen level (due to birth control, xenoestrogen exposure, and impaired estrogen metabolism). Food sources of Vitamin E includes fatty fish like salmon, almonds, avocados, extra virgin olive oil. (View Tweet)
Consider adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, tulsi, reishi, or schisandra. While adaptogens shouldn't be used during pregnancy, they can be very helpful for women in many stages of life, even during menopause. Herbs like these have been demonized by conventional medicine. But that is because you can't patent a natural substance. Don't sleep on using herbs to support your body. (View Tweet)
