Palmanova, the star-shaped city, was constructed by the Venetians in 1593 to prevent attacks from Austrian & Turkish forces. It was so admired and feared that no army ever dared to assault it. From its walls, no cannonade was ever fired. Its mere presence was the best deterrent.
